Stylish Getaway: What to pack for a weekend away
Flee to the sun, a cultural exhibition, some gastronomic delight or into the arms of your lover... whatever the purpose of your weekend jaunt, just be sure to pack some fashion gems.
The prospect of some welcome autumnal sunshine is the perfect incentive to pack lots of bright colours, but think layers and you'll beat any sudden change in temperature.
Start with the basics, such as leggings, well-cut trousers, a mac in an invigorating colour, and comfortable shoes that you've broken in. Flat riding boots and a navy pea coat look great with basic leggings and a simple top for travelling, but if you are going first class, wear that LBD you packed for dinner.
The fashion world has fallen in love with monochrome graphic prints this season, largely thanks to Miuccia Prada. I'm always trying to spot new, affordable labels and I was very taken with the J'aime La Vie print top (see page 28), which works equally well with leggings, pencil skirts, trousers and jeans -- you should be aiming for that kind of versatility. This French brand is available exclusively at Carraig Donn, an Irish chain with 22 branches around the country (www.carraig donn.com).
Leggings offer an unrivalled fashion flexibility and look great styled here with ankle boots and a mac/trilby combo. At this stage, your case is still pretty light, so you can afford -- even by Ryanair standards -- to pack a few dresses. But keep the palette simple, and if you stick to monochrome, a handful of choice accessories will go a long way.
This season's biggest jacket crush is a flying jacket. The faux-sheepskin one at Penneys is super light, both in weight and on the wallet (€35).
