Stylemma: How to wear hotpants this summer
Published 23/06/2010 | 11:55
The shops seem to be particularly full of all manner of short shorts. I love showing my legs off so I’m not too worried, but should I stick to the usual denim styles or is there something that’s more trendy this season?
Every Summer we hear the same things; “hotpants are back”. Of course they are! They allow those with perfect legs to flaunt their assets without looking like total posers. I say go for it.
The usual denim styles are probably the coolest and if you’re following the lead of the “London set” (Alexa, Aggy, Pixie et al) then these are the only option. Preferably they’ll be vintage Levi cut-offs, high waisted and super short. Urban Outfitters always have a great selection or you could try vintage/charity shops for these too. Alternatively, you could get at your old ‘boyfriend jeans’ with a scissors and make your own without spending a penny.
On the high street there are a tonne of options; Topshop have a massive range of vintage looking shorts so there’s something to suit everyone. Zara and River Island shouldn’t be overlooked either and are always bang on trend with up-to-the-minute styles.
If you’re looking for something a bit softer you could go for white denim. It’s a little less grungy and can look really smart with a tucked-in shirt. Warehouse and Topshop both have styles with washed-out floral patterns that feel romantic and ultra feminine too. A loose t-shirt is all you need to finish the look.
If you’re into pattern there are loads around, with polka dots and love hearts featuring heavily. American Apparel have their usual extensive range of candy colours, primary red, black and white. They’ve got a retro vibe to them, have a high waist and are really flattering but they’re not for the shy since they’re short and tight.
The message this season is to have fun with denim so whether you choose love hearts, sorbet styles, double denim or plain old vintage Levis, you can’t go wrong. Leave the fake tan at home though, please.
