Dear Stylemma, I really want to buy a pair of Seventies-style trousers but I don’t really know how to pull the look off. Should I go designer?
When it comes to Seventies-inspired jeans, you’re spoilt for choice this season, both on the catwalk and the high street. If you want to splurge, then we’d recommend Marc by Marc Jacobs bootcut jeans in dark navy, €280, available at BTs. Nailing this trend needn’t mean breaking the bank though, as Warehouse’s New High Waist Straight Leg Jean is a steal at €65. Be warned: these are high-risk trousers and need to be handled with care. In the wrong hands they can make hips wider and legs shorter: not good. Therefore, heels are a must to work this look— try espadrilles, platforms or chunky courts. To avoid looking bottom-heavy, choose darker denims such as Reiss’s Birkin High Waist Kick Flare in indigo, €110. The darker hue will have a slimming effect on your thighs and legs, especially if paired with a pale utility blouse or tank. The key? Tuck your top in — not only will this draw attention to your waist, it will make your legs seem longer and keep that classic Seventies silhouette.
With statement jeans such as these, stick to a modest flare and keep accessories to a minimum, otherwise you may end up looking like a Farrah Fawcett tribute.
