Dear Stylemma, I’m interested in buying a midi-length skirt, but all the ones I’ve seen look really old-fashioned. How can I make it work?
You’re quite right — the midi is a tricky length to pull off. To avoid looking like a pensioner, choose a skirt that’s nearer to knee length than calf length. A skirt that ends on or just below the knee will be a more flattering bet, especially if your calves are on the large side, and opt for diaphanous fabrics.
Whistles’ Claudette midi skirt, €119, comes in a midnight blue and will ensure you look fabulous not frumpy. Topshop’s polka-dot calf-length skirt, €46, comes in a light jersey material, and it would look great teamed with a loose-fitting cotton vest and a pair of espadrilles. Reiss’s Kirby A-line pleat-front skirt, €110, is made from fine leather and it would be a perfect choice for more formal occasions. To avoid dumpiness, wearing heels is a must for this look.
