Dear Stylemma, One of the girls in the office is getting married at the end of this month. I’ve bought my dress already — a garnet, knee-length, velvet number — but I don’t know what to wear over it.
It needs to be something warm as we’ll be walking from the church to the reception. I have plenty of winter coats, but I don’t think they suit. What would you recommend?
We feel your pain; there’s nothing worse than ruining a great outfit with a mismatched coat or cardigan, but we think with such a great dress, you have plenty of options. With its cinched waist and full, flouncy skirt, Reiss’s Angel coat, €405, is a fantastic shape and totally appropriate — dress it up with a garnet brooch and/or a rich-red scarf and you’ll be set. If you feel like steering away from the traditional wedding-guest look, then we recommend Topshop’s sheepskin flying jacket in black at €488. It’s pricey, but it will keep you snug, and the leather will give your velvet dress a tough, rock-chick vibe. Coast’s Irene faux-fur coat, €160, is a classic piece — team it with elbow-length gloves for a dash of old-school glamour.
