Style Watch: How to look fab at 50

Q I'm about to turn 50 and need a wardrobe overhaul. I work in the arts and, while I love fashion, I feel dated at work. I want a contemporary look with a bit of edge. I really admire Mary Portas, who is my age but always looks modern. How can I update my look?
A Mary Portas has a great formula to her wardrobe, pairing classic pieces with unusual accessory choices. For example she will wear a black shift dress but pair it with tights in green or purple. Or she'll wear a simple white shirt with a chunky necklace. She never plays it safe with her shoes either, pumps are cast aside in favour of futuristic wedges or heels.
Choose edgy pieces by Japanese labels such as Comme De Garcon.
Look for abstract, digital or painterly effect prints. Try unusual choices such as Fenn Wright Manson's burgundy silk top and abstract print skirt with a pair of green shoes and a cuff.
Check out Isabel Marrant's boxy jacket with a pair of tailored crops and wedges. Finally, update your look with quirky jewellery.
