Victoria Beckham broke the fashion rules at Cannes with her red carpet look
Victoria Beckham broke the fashion rules at Cannes and made a surprising appearance on the red carpet.
The Cannes red-carpet is always a glamorous, star-studded opening of the film festival as stars flock to the French Riviera to showcase their dazzling style as they promote their movies.
And the French film festival is notoriously strict when it comes to dress code and black tie or evening dress are required.
But Victoria Beckham ditched the over-the-top gown for a bustier trouser suit from her own collection.
As the fashion designer stepped out for the Café Society premiere and opening gala, fans took to Twitter to praise the star for her bold fashion move.
Gushing over the unusual outfit choice on Twitter, one user wrote: "I loved Victoria Beckham's outfit for Cannes 2016."
While another added, "Victoria Beckham managed to make a suit look every bit as glamorous as a dress. I want!"
The 42-year-old later took to Instagram to share some behind-the-scenes moments from the event, including a photo that demonstrates her impressive high-kicks.
Dressed in her monochrome suit, Victoria threw her leg in the air as she reclined on a sofa in her matching shoes.
Eva (41), lay seductively behind the mum-of-four in her lilac ensemble.
Cannes Film Festival has been the scene for some of the most iconic fashion moments in history over its 69 years, including a then 18-year-old Brigitte Bardot's introduction to the world in 1953; Elizabeth Taylor wearing a diamond tiara in 1957 (attending a premiere for a movie she didn't even star in); and Grace Kelly capturing the heart of Prince Rainer of Monaco in 1955 in her Cassini lace gown.
A brief scandal broke out in 2015 when women rumours circulated that women were told to wear high heels to climb the steps to the main venue.
The festival later denied this was a set rule for the red carpet.
