Model and girlfriend to Rob Kearney, Jess Redden has opened up overcoming kidney failure.
Renal failure occurs when the kidneys become unable to filter waste products from the blood, which may result in a potentially fatal build up of chemicals in the bloodstream.
The 23-year-old has opened up about her life-threatening encounter with the illness two years ago and how it inspired her to return to college.
“I was getting really bad pains in my back and I was like, ‘God what is that?’ We went into A&E first and my creatinine levels were 80 and they’re supposed to be 300 and something, they were so, so low,” she told The Sun.
“[The doctors] kept me in and ran tests. They were talking about dialysis and biopsies. And they couldn’t even explain it. They still don’t know why, they thought it was a big massive viral infection. My poor parents, they were so upset.”
“I was in Blackrock for two weeks, I couldn’t get out of bed I was just so sick,” she revealed.
“Gradually I got better, I was given antibiotics but it was scary at the time, but that’s when I really valued my own health. I hadn’t really thought about it much until then.”
Redden, who has a degree in psychology from UCD, will be returning to university to study pharmacy this September.
The self-confessed fitness fanatic said that the illness inspired her to pursue a career in pharmaceuticals.
“That reinforced the importance of health for me. People think that pharmacists, the traditional role is just dispensing medicines. But they do so much more.”
“I think being part of a team that manufactures a drug that can save millions of people’s lives is just like I’d love that.”
Jess has been in a relationship with Ireland rugby ace Rob Kearney for two years.
The petite blonde is signed to Andrea Roche Modelling Agency, and recently posed in her first lingerie photoshoot at the launch of the new Lingerie Room in Brown Thomas.
