Style Dilemma: Outfits for Christenings
Darren Kennedy solves your sartorial problems
I have a Christening coming up of a good friend. I’m generally a black-skinnyleggings- and-top girl. I would like something that could get me from day to night, preferably not a dress, and something with colour. Any suggestions? Tara (30), The West
One of the dominant themes for the coming season is Baroque, with ornate embellishments, sumptuous fabrics, regal brocades and gilded detailing on everything from dresses to bomber jackets.
Dolce & Gabbana set the tone for opulence, but they weren't alone with Jason Wu, Stella McCartney and Marni all featuring this trend.
River Island has captured this style for autumn/winter with some luscious separates, that can work with a day or night wardrobe, such as a bejewelled mirror vest (€53.50) and a gold velvet pencil skirt (€33.50). Both pieces can be worn individually but together they create a statement ‘maximalist' look.
If that's all too much for your taste, pare it back by teaming the gold pencil skirt with a simple black vest, statement necklace and a black blazer. Similarly, the mirror vest will work a treat with a pair of your black skinnies and some ankle boots.
Statement trousers are another of autumn's most-wanted. The tailored, green-spot jacquard, anklegrazing pair at ASOS is a prime example (€56.87, ASOS). Trousers like this work best with a pared down top, such as a plain white shirt. Over at H&M, you'll find a winter floral-print pair for €29.95.
