Luis Civit €679
Kurt Geiger €195
Helen McAlinden €295

Although I'm really looking forward to my wedding in December, I'm kind of dreading shopping for my mother's outfit. She is a young 59 and has recently dropped to a size 14. We have a budget of up to about €800.

Bride-to-be, Dublin

Within your budget, I'd consider the Luis Civit label, designed in Barcelona and specialising in occasion wear, particularly traditional two-pieces.

Crafted with high-quality fabrics, the current crop of designs comes in a rich palette of gold, silver, plum, and black and white.

Classically chic monochrome is sure to keep the mother of the bride smiling. For example, the black dress with white trim and belt comes with a matching cropped white jacket (€679, Richard Alan at Pamela Scott).

For a more contemporary look, young Irish designer Niamh O'Neill's hot-pink wool crepe dress with suede bow detail is a tailored piece with clean lines that is very form-flattering and terrific value (€270, Design Centre at Powerscourt Townhouse).

Pied-a-Terre's mid-length slinky knot dress with statement slash collar, cap sleeves and ruched detailing might be the eye-catching number worthy of the occasion (€234, House of Fraser).

Another option is the long-sleeved 'Sophie' black lace dress – meticulously detailed and perfect for the modern mother-of-the-bride at a winter wedding. It's well within budget, too (€295, Helen McAlinden).

Accessorise with black heels and a colourful bag – for instance, the lime 'Palermo' clutch at House of Fraser (€128.70).

Alternatively, add a pop of colour to your footwear with the pink 'Carey' KG Kurt Geiger heel (€195, Brown Thomas).

Enjoy the big day!
