Style Dilemma: Holiday packing that beats the baggage restrictions

I am going on holiday to Portugal for a week. It's my first beach visit and proper holiday in years. We're travelling with a budget airline – packing has never been my strong point. What practical advice do you have on what to pack? Nadia (30), Co Cork
Going on holiday doesn't necessarily mean splashing out on a completely new wardrobe – a few clever tweaks and additions to your usual summer clothes will have you sorted.
For instance, a blouse you'd normally wear with jeans or a skirt will work nicely with shorts for a day of sightseeing or cocktails al fresco. At Zara you'll find loosely tailored shorts, such as the navy high- waisted pair (1 €39.95). Versatile separates like these are great holiday-wardrobe multi-taskers.
Add a touch of French Riviera chic to your style with the lightweight fit-and-flare wrap dress by Phase Eight (€131). A Breton stripe is a classic, and the striped maxi at Heatons (3 €12) will be handy for throwing on over a bikini.
For swimwear, Penneys' high-summer collection features an Aztec print one-piece with side cut-out detailing (4€10).
Meanwhile, a couple of day dresses, such as the paisley-print collared skater dress at Alwear ( €40), can be dressed up or down for day or evening. Statement jewellery, such as oversized earrings or blinging neckpieces, will punch up your style while adding next to nothing to the weight of your luggage.
Wear layers and your heaviest shoes for your travelling outfit to keep you warm in the airport and save on your baggage allowance. Bon voyage!
