I like the military trend and recently bought a parka jacket, but I feel it looks a bit dull when worn with neutrals. Is there anyway I can inject some colour and fun into my look?

The military/utility look is a massive trend for this spring but it can look bland with all the sand, khaki and beige tones painting a bleak desert-scape over your wardrobe, when we could all do with some much-needed colour and cheer.

Try mixing floral patterns into the equation for a fresh, pretty and bang-on trend take on utility. A simple floral print dress under your parka will freshen up your outfit and soften the toughness of this military staple.

H&M has some gorgeous organic cotton floral numbers in store for under €50. Finish off with a pair of brogues and some lacy socks to further play with the feminine/masculine theme.

A colourful floral scarf can really enliven a dull jacket, so try throwing on Accessorize's bold printed version.

Try a floral piece like the asos.com floral blazer which works in the reverse of the parka/floral dress combo. It would work brilliantly as a foil for a wear's military khaki play suit, €30, or its cute khaki shorts, €20. Try with chunky wooden high heels.

For an everyday softener to the military look, I love River Island's floral, printed sweater which manages to be girlie and tomboy cool all in one go. Try it with a pair of chinos or with your favourite jeans and your parka thrown over it for a casual take on this trend.

For the fashion fearless, try River Island's ditsy floral palazzo pants with your parka and tone down the look with some plimsolls.
