Step back in time
Fashion-forward vintage on the high street
If there are any vintage fiends sick of emulating Peggy, Betty and Joan from ‘Mad Men’, then I suggest you roll back the years a decade or so, because the high street is full of fabulous 1940s and 1950s-style, vintage-inspired pieces.
Our shoot looks very authentic, especially with the shiny motor, and I bet you will be surprised to learn that the wartime look came from Zara, with lovely accessories from River Island — a company with a sterling reputation for trying to bring the past into modern dressing.
Supermarket fashion has come on in leaps and bounds too. Savida at Dunnes Stores is so fashion- forward, yet with a nod to vintage styling and those retro values that everyone loves to add to their wardrobe, such as velvet, which works year after year. Tesco is also proving that it competes on the style front, with a very strong Christmas line and a hero velvet dress which, at €30, is a selfgift purchase if ever I heard of one.
With my passion for shoes, I couldn’t resist the Zena croc and suede pair from Dune — perfect for teaming with some tweed shorts and socks or a great country jacket. For evenings, Falke’s seamed, stay-up stockings add a very authentic touch to a LBD travelling back in time. Janet Reger is a legend in lingerie circles, loved by women who appreciate the art of dressing from the inside out. Janet’s latest collection for Debenhams carries the whiff of wartime drama and passion.
