THIS is the €18.50 dress that has become a fashion sensation with budget-conscious shoppers.

The cut-price frock is proving that Kate Middleton, and not Mary Byrne, has 'the X factor' for shoppers at Tesco.

It is described as a 'tribute' to the £385 'Issa' designer dress which Ms Middleton wore for the announcement of her engagement to Prince William.

It has proved to be one of the hits of the week with cash-strapped followers of fashion in Ireland, with Tesco Ireland confirming "hundreds" of sales.

With shoppers keeping a tight rein on their purses, retailers are unleashing a blitz of budget-beating discount sales in the run up to Christmas.

While the start of the official pre-Christmas sales holds firm in most department stores, a rash of pop-up sales and special promotions have begun around the country.

Brown Thomas ran a 20pc discount promotion over the weekend.

Across the country, businesses are hopeful that consumers will re-open their wallets after tomorrow, when the full impact of the budgetary cuts are known.

Late night shopping is being extended in some stores until 10pm this week and 11pm next week.

Meanwhile, shopping centres like Dundrum and St Stephen's Green in Dublin that traditionally held off re-opening until December 27 are opening on December 26.
