Fashion editor Bairbre Power homes in on some fashion collectables

Fashion is cyclical, which can be both inspiring and frustrating. Most of us hoard clothes in the certain knowledge that they will, eventually, come back into vogue. But the question is, how long should you give them squatting rights in your wardrobe?
Leopard is always a good bet because it is constantly returning as a new trend, and the same goes for military and velvets. But in times of financial readjustment (so much nicer than the R-word, don't you think?), it's empowering to buy something in the safe knowledge that it will always be cool and on trend.
The buzzword here is vintage, but if you don't have the confidence to source it at a specialist store, then opt for a modern take at alwear -- the Irish chain is celebrating 25 years in business this year.
Its Showtime collection, which arrives on November 2, has a strong vintage vibe including 1920s-style beaded dresses with embellished, scalloped hemlines, pretty jackets with beaded fronts that work am and pm, modern takes on the Victorian pintuck cream blouse, glamorous feather wraps that instantly lift old jackets, and very cute batwing dresses.
To celebrate, alwear is hosting a birthday party on November 10. Guests get 25pc off and a makeover zone courtesy of Peter Mark & GOSH. MTV presenter Laura Whitmore will be playing her very first Irish DJ gig! See www.awear.com for details of how to get your hands on tickets.
