After years of making women walk round with bent shoulders and backache thanks to their supersized handbags, designers have finally caught on – the newest carry case is so tiny it’s being labelled the mini bag.

Not so long ago women were carrying around half their life in their handbags, stuffing them with spare clothes, diaries, shoes, books and any amount of electrical items. But with excess no longer so fashionable thanks to the ongoing global financial crisis, it’s now time to downsize. Key this season is the small shoulder bag, big enough to fit in the essentials but small enough to ensure you won’t end up paying out hundreds in chiropractor bills after a month lugging it around. So you can still carry your lipstick and mirror, just make sure you leave the old till receipts at home.

Big designers like Prada, Celine, Mulberry and Gucci are all in on the act, offering dainty handbags on long straps which can be worn dangling from one shoulder or across the body. These new accessories are so small they won’t ruin the line of your outfit either, meaning they can be worn with any item in your wardrobe.

Alexa Chung is a known devotee, with Keira Knightley opting for a padded version when she showed off her new cropped hair style at Paris Fashion Week recently.
