Kate Middleton wrapped up in a burgundy wool skirt suit by Paule Ka yesterday.

The style icon chose the sumptuous shade of suit in an appropriately warm fabric as she began her series of UK engagements.

The two-piece suit consisted of a double-breasted jacket teamed with a black lace top and ribbed skirt.

Ready-to-wear French clothing brand Paule Ka was founded by stylist Serge Cajfinger in 1988. The label is famous for creating skirt suits and sharp shapes inspired by Jackie Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn.

The length of the skirt was notably shorter than the duchess usually wears. She topped off her cosy look with black tights and sensible heels.

Prince William colour co-ordinated his outfit for the occasion by matching his tie to Kate's suit.

This was the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first official appearance on home soil following the couple's tour of South East Asia last month. It was also the royal couple's first UK engagement since Kate's topless pictures scandal.

She is due to carryout engagements on her own today as Prince William is attending the funeral of his childhood nanny.
