Karl Lagerfeld hosts Chanel's Cruise Collection in Dubai
Karl Lagerfeld is sure Coco Chanel would have been fascinated by the Middle East.
The celebrated designer helms the fashion house started by Coco in 1909 and yesterday debuted his latest designs at the Chanel Cruise 2014/15 collection in Dubai.
Models strutted down the catwalk in an array of beautiful prints, which were a world away from Karl's recent bubblegum kitsch clothes.
"She [Coco] would have been fascinated by the Middle East, just as she was fascinated by China and England. Dubai's a city that rose out of the sea and desert in less than 30 years," Karl mused to Fashion Telegraph.
"It's like Atlantis - and now it has the tallest building on the planet [the Burj Khalifa]. Once that honour went to the Eiffel Tower. Then the Empire State building. Now it's here. That shows you how the world is changing. This is such a modern city I wanted to avoid anything folklorique. I couldn't have done a collection in Dubai that wasn't modern".
The front row of the catwalk collection was jam packed with famous faces, including Dakota Fanning, Tilda Swinton and Vanessa Paradis. Janelle Monáe provided the entertainment, with a musical set that enthralled the stylish crowd.
Slumdog Millionaire actress Freida Pinto was also in attendance and couldn't help but marvel at the beautiful surroundings.
“I was taking so many pictures on the way in, I was holding up the entire crowd behind me,” she laughed to WWD.
The new designs channelled boho and folkore looks, with flowing dresses and blouses. There were classic Chanel staple items within the collection, with models looking chic in tweet jackets and skirts and trousers.
