The party season is most definitely here and if you’re wondering how to freshen up this year’s party looks, the one thing you need to know is that the typical little black dress brimming with bling-tastic sparkle is a thing of the past! This season it’s all about the unexpected; sportswear with sequins, knitwear with velvet-adding a dash of glamour but keeping it real with something old.

On the catwalks, we saw Burberry team jewel toned ensembles with bold and bulky aviator jackets, whilst the Erdem mini dresses were contrasted with heeled hiker boots. The key is to pair feminine pieces with more edgy ones – even worker boots will do the trick though if you are a heels gal and can’t quite stomach the thought of chunky flat boots, simply swap your strappy stilettos for ankle boots.

Here’s a rundown of how to wear this season’s party looks.

In Your 20’s

Go for a vibrantly jewel toned dress or skirt and team with black opaque tights, a leather aviator jacket and chunky faux fur lined boots. Juxtapose feminine textures such as lace with more aggressive ones like leather, and think tomboy but with a sexy, feminine appeal. If you’re going to go for a super mini hemline, pair with more bulky ankle boots to toughen up the girly look.

In Your 30’s

This season is all about playing around with dress and skirt lengths and party dressing doesn’t have to equal thigh-skimming dresses. For those of you who are fans of the maxi skirt, you’ll be pleased to hear that these were prominent on the D&G catwalk and are a huge look right now. Even midi-length skirts make for a great compromise and you can team your maxi or midi with a top that is low-cut at the back for a sexy edge. Alternatively, opt for a lacy blouse which will look incredible paired with a fitted maxi skirt that flares at the bottom.

In Your 40’s

Maxi skirts are a key look for the party season and can easily be teamed with a chic knitted jumper when worn in the right way, as demonstrated by Marc Jacobs. Ideally the maxi should be made of a luxe fabric such as velvet and fitted to accentuate the figure and balance the silhouette if your jumper is on the more bulky side. Use accessories to dress up the look - think dazzling earrings or a statement cocktail ring.
