Parkas are the coolest way to keep warm this autumn-winter. Holly White has rummaged through the high-street rails to find options to suit every budget. So, channel your inner Liam Gallagher and give an extra edge to your outfits
No parka article would be complete without an urban practical specimen, and this is just that. It’s a throwback to Oasis and Blur’s arrival on the music scene and the stylistic elements they promoted. This parka is a practical piece that, when worn well, can be incredibly cool. It reminds me of the kind of thing film crewtypes cosily shuffle around in. I liked these high-waisted shorts from alwear as they are slightly longer, a little looser and more flattering than most versions I’ve seen lately.
I love wearing pretty dresses during the day, but I like to tone down the glamour — and a parka does that perfectly. This pastel one from alwear may not be the most practical when faced with the Irish weather, but it is lined with jersey cotton, so it’s high in the comfort stakes. I fell in love with these wedge shoe-boots in Miss Selfridge. They are so comfortable, and create the effect of endless legs when paired with tights.
I tend not to like long dresses as I’m tall and they are never long enough. This is an exception. I love the colours and print. This look is the closest I could come to this season’s trend of mixing high-glamour pieces with grungier elements. The gladiator sandals are a throwback to last summer. All in all, it’s a comfy look that could take you anywhere.
I think this jumper is really sweet. It’s a little on the childish side, but let’s ignore that and just extol the virtues of the parka and wonderful polka-dot skirt. The jacket is of the practical variety, ie, it will keep you warm and dry, and it’s like a light and fluffy duvet.
This is a great parka with sleeves that roll up, and it’s incredibly comfortable. I normally see parkas as a daytime look, but when styled like this they could almost enter the nightclub scene. I love that mix of glam party dress with casual jacket. The colour of this Coast dress is vibrant and rich for the autumnal party season.
