Hair-raising creations are a cut above at the Irish Hairdressing Championsihips
The air was thick with excitement and hairspray.
More than 250 of the best stylists in the country had gathered at the Irish Hairdressing Championship yesterday.
Using props and materials, hairdressers styled, crimped and coiffed with purpose.
Trussed into a tight corset and wearing a bird wired to her head was all in a day's work for 28-year-old performance artist Jenna Whelan from Waterford.
The macabre style came from the imagination of Aisling Ryan (27) from Urban Hype salon in Waterford.
Entering her look 'Victorian Secrets' into the Trainee Creative Fantasy category was Teresa Conroy (23), from Belmullet, who is a stylist at Salon 2 Hairdressers in Sligo.
Gerrard Hynes, president of the Irish Hairdressers Federation (IHF), said the talent surpassed previous years. "I'm seeing a much, much higher standard this year," he said. The awards will determine IHF Hairdresser of the Year, IHF Barber/Men's Hairdresser of the Year and IHF Trainee of the Year.
