Covet, Dublin

Covet is a treasure trove of labels such as Stella McCartney, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Valentino, Christian Louboutin, Oscar de La Renta and Prada, and sizes average 8-12.

Rental prices are roughly 10pc of the original retail price of the item. Prices start at €50 for short dresses and €85 for full length (based on three days, including dry cleaning)

Delivery to your door in Dublin costs €10 and up to €20 around the country.

Worriers can take out a 'damage indemnity policy' costing 12.5pc of your rental fee and this covers you for everything bar loss of the garment.

However, if the garment is torn or you get a dreaded red-wine stain etc, there may be a repair charge, and if the dress is ruined beyond repair, a reasonable replacement fee will have to be charged.

Covet takes a 50pc deposit when you book and the balance is paid upon collection.

Couture For Hire, Dublin

Building on the success of her coutureonline.ie fashion business, Nadya Gaughran went into bricks and mortar last month and opened her Couture For Hire boutique on Dublin’s Duke Street.

Nadya started her online business after working in event management in the legal world. She stocks brands such as Roberto Cavalli, Marchesa, Victoria Beckham, Badgley Mischka, Jovani and some very elegant Herve Leger bandage dresses.

The stock tends to come in both long and short styles and across sizes 6-16.

The cheapest rental is €60 for three nights, and a deposit of €50 is taken. If the dress is damaged, cannot be repaired and they are unable to rent it to future customers, your credit card will be charged the retail price of the dress. This is included in the waiver you must sign before renting. All dresses must be returned before noon on the third or fifth day of your rental period. A next-day courier service costs €7 in Dublin, or €14 return. You have 24 hours after making the booking to cancel the dress, otherwise you lose your deposit.

For orders online, payment must be made in full. For orders in store, a 30pc deposit is taken and the balance will be paid upon collection. If you do not have a credit card, a €50 security deposit is taken.

They recommend that bridesmaids reserve dresses for seven-day rental periods and schedule their delivery date four or five days prior to the wedding.

Divine, Maynooth & Malahide

Mary Greene opened Divine in Maynooth seven years ago, and five years ago she opened a second store in Malahide.

"I started renting out dresses when I noticed that people were not spending on full-length evening wear. I do labels such as Dynasty of London, Hunters & Gatherers, He Loved An Angel, and Imagine of New York," she says.

As a precaution, Divine asks for a credit-card swipe for the full value of the dress – in this case, €299 for the black dress and €429 for the gold dress.

These dresses are available in sizes 8-14, and Divine has other dresses available up to size 18. Divine also offers a free make-over with Fuschia products with your rental.

Frock n Fabulous, Dundrum

The Frock n Fabulous website launched at the start of 2012, and Kara Maher opened a showroom two months ago in Dundrum. Labels include Valentino, John Galliano, Badgley Mischka, Marchesa, Monique Lhullier, Rachel Gilbert and Temperley.

"I'm passionate about showcasing Irish designers and I stock Sarah O'Neill and Jennifer Rothwell, along with Irish milliners such as Edel Ramberg, Aisling Ahern, Fiona Mangan, Edel Staunton and Sarah Stephens," says Kara.

Once the courier arrives at your door and you have signed for the package, you have two hours to notify the company if you want to return or exchange the dress.

You can email returns@frocknfabulous.ie with your preference, and they will either refund you the rental cost or ship you another dress.

If you are unsure of which dress you like, they can bring a choice of dresses to your home – this service is by appointment only.

A credit-card number is taken with each rental for security. If a dress is damaged beyond repair, it will be looked into, before informing you of any required next steps or payments.
