Gigi Hadid wore a poncho at the Tommy Hilfiger show because she 'wasn't quite as tall and thin' as the other models
Tommy Hilfiger has revealed Gigi Hadid had to wear a poncho because she wasn't "quite as tall and thin" as the other models.
Hadid, who has since launched a capsule collection with the American designer, is one of the top models in the world, but in September 2015, she hadn't quite reached the level of fame where she could wear whatever she wanted on the runway for the designer's privilege of working with her.
In conversation with Yahoo Style, Hilfiger said they put an oversized poncho on her because of her body shape. But it was a move that paid off in the end because the unlikely statement piece made headlines around the world and subsequently sold out.
"Our casting director said, 'She doesn’t really fit because, you know, she's not quite as tall as the other girls, she's not quite as thin'. So they put a red, white and blue poncho on her.
"It covered a lot of her body unfortunately, but it received millions of hits."
For the record, this is her in the same show:
The American designer released a statement following yesterday's story clarifying his comments, saying: "Gigi is truly the definition of a ‘Tommy Girl’ – her magnetic personality is bright, confident and always optimistic.
"I've known her for many years, and am extremely proud to have her as the ambassador of my brand and as a collaborator of our collections. Any statement to the contrary is completely false."
Their personal and working relationship seems unaffected as both are riding high on the success of the 20-year-old's debut capsule collection for the brand Gigi x Tommy.
And we can thank the social media star for bringing back the Hilfiger style of the '90s.
