Darren Kennedy: Grab yourself a souvenir
The embellished bomber is back with a bang
The Souvenir jacket, or 'sukajan' as they're known, looks set be the sartorial craze of summer 2016. Ryan Gosling brought this cool cover-up to the attention of a whole new generation in the movie Drive but it originates in post-World War II Japan - when occupying American soldiers commissioned Japanese artists to decorate their jackets with oriental embroidery to commemorate their time overseas, hence the name 'souvenir' jacket.
These satin pieces were embellished with bright, ornately handcrafted designs that mixed Eastern and Western themes. Think dragons, tigers, fauna and cherry blossoms sitting alongside American eagles and phraseology on satin versions of the classic varsity bomber. Sometimes collared and quilted, the originals were often produced from parachute silk. On the catwalks, Valentino, Gucci, Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton presented versions that are appropriately bold and statement-making. For a real throwback, pair yours with a crew neck tee, cuffed jeans and burgundy loafers.
We're used to seeing Olivia in a more tailored, sleek look but it's refreshing to see her opt for this floaty, boho-style gown at the Burberry fashion show. Falling to mid-calf length, the navy dress with oversized paisley print is relaxed and simple. Her ox-blood boots bring out the burgundy colour in the print and the belt defines her waist.
Perhaps the ultimate in utilitarian wear, the bomber jacket is back with a bang and trending this year with endless varieties to suit every style. The fit and feel has timeless appeal and provides the perfect finish to toughen up an otherwise ladylike ensemble - think a floral dress and vertiginous heels paired with a khaki military-grade bomber jacket to up your sartorial cred.
