America can boast the first success in the Ryder Cup in the fashion stakes at least.

The transatlantic visitors, and their wives and girlfriends, delivered a polished, uniform look with camel cardigans over black dresses, designed by Ralph Lauren.

And, the European side looked rather haphazard in comparison, as they all sported a variety of trousers and skirts, under a navy belted mac.

Yet channelling very independent looks and dressing loads of different ladies figures, and heights from one capsule collection can be fraught with difficulties, as the Irish designer Paul Costelloe will confirm. He previously dressed the European Ryder Cup ladies for a number of campaigns and endured the slings and arrows for 'air hostess' scarves and dresses that didn't flatter any chunkier figures.

Designer Zoe Jordan was disappointed yesterday when she discovered that the short blue coat that she was commissioned to make for the European ladies would not be worn at the opening ceremony. The Dublin-born designer spent months on the project.

However, in a statement yesterday, it was confirmed that "due to a last minute change of direction Zoe Jordan will no longer be worn at the opening ceremony. However, in celebration of the Ryder Cup the coat is available from Harrods."

It is clearly a disappointing development for Zoe who had been invited by Paul McGinley to make the coat. However, Zoe brushed off the disappointment as she said she was "happy to have created a piece that captures the spirit of the Ryder Cup."
