Azealia Banks has revealed fashion can "ruin you" as a credible artist.
The 21-year-old singer explained how it is easy to get caught up in the fashion industry when you are a successful pop star. She confessed that she became so obsessed with this world, that at one point she almost lost her focus for making anti mainstream music.
“Too much fashion attention can distract you as an artist and ruin you. I almost got there, almost got to the point where it was all fashion, fashion, fashion, fashion, and I was almost like, ‘it’s fashion darling!’,” she revealed to online music magazine HYPETRAK. “Then it got to the point where the only Azealia Banks record people were listening to was 212, and it was the only one anyone knew. If you place your faith in the fashion industry then you will get let down as an artist. It’s very important to remember what you are here for.”
The star understands that her unusual look and sense of style is something that works for her. The fast-rising talent has been snapped up by fashion label ASOS recently to front their campaigns. However, she insists there is a fine line between being style savvy and becoming a brand sell out.
“I think fashion and style is one thing but I think branding can really hurt you as an artist, especially if it’s not real and for something you’re not really into. For example I’m really genuinely into Alexander Wang. I also shop at ASOS so it makes sense [for me to collaborate with the online clothing destination],” Azealia explained. “You can very easily get sucked up by the fashion world because they bring artists in to make themselves look a certain way, and then as soon as someone new comes in they’ve completely forgotten about you. It’s so fickle. They will completely forget and disregard you.”
