Although it isn’t always boldly on show, lingerie is undoubtedly the most important part to any outfit.
It can change your silhouette, give you confidence and make you feel a million dollars.
Who knew that the smallest part of what you’re wearing can affect your confidence the most?
Following the launch of the new Brown Thomas Lingerie Room, we had a chat with Brown Thomas Lingerie Buyer Roslyn Ellis, who filled us in on the top trends for AW16, gave us a guide to bra sizes and told us what pieces of underwear every woman should own.
One of last year’s biggest trends, it looks like maroon is here stay.
“The biggest colour trend for this autumn winter is maroon and wine shades. Every single brand features those colours and they come in so many different styles, so there’s something whatever your preference. There’s a lot of petrol-blue and navy coming in too,” Roslyn says.
“As for shape, plunging necklines are one to watch. If there’s a style you wouldn’t usually wear, give it a try. You can surprise yourself. If you try a new style in the right size it can be very flattering.”
Thanks to the 1990’s revival and their Insta-worthy status, Calvin Klein bralettes and bottoms have shown how underwear can be both comfortable and fashionable.
However, Roslyn stresses that underwear should always be comfortable, no matter what style you’re wearing: “Underwear should never cause pain.”
In fact, it should be so comfortable that you could sleep in it. “So many people wear the Calvin Klein branded bralettes and bottoms as sleepwear,” she says.
When it comes to fit, Roslyn explains how some brands can stock up to 72 different sizes. From AA cups to JJ cups, a 28 inch band to a 40 inch band, there’s a bra to fit everyone.
An ill-fitting bra can affect your posture, silhouette and how your clothes look. However, your bra size may differ depending on the brand, so it’s very important to get fitted, Roslyn says.
“Sizes can vary in different brands, so you may have to adjust. Back sizes may run smaller in certain brands, cup sizes may run bigger in certain brands. Sometimes it’s not about the number or the letter.”
As for the staples everyone should have in their wardrobe, Roslyn says it’s pretty simple.
“The first is a good t-shirt bra,” she says.
But it doesn’t have to be boring: “No one will ever believe me when I tell them that red is invisible under a white t-shirt, but it is!” she laughed.
An invisible brief is Roslyn’s second essential, whether it be a boxer or thong style.
Lastly, she says: “Everybody should have something that makes you feel great when you put it on.”
“Especially with the likes of Instagram and pictures on social media, you don’t want to be comparing yourself to other people. Confidence can start with good lingerie.”
That sounds like a pretty good place to start, we think.
