It was victory twice over for 22-year-old Emmy Slattery from Dublin who won two prestigious student fashion awards on the same night.

Emmy, from Gainsborough in Malahide, yesterday walked away with the DIT Student Design Award -- at the Alfa Romeo fashion show in Vicar Street -- and the Nokia Young Fashion Designer Award, at the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre.

Competition was intense with 28 students from third-level fashion colleges around the country vying for the prizes -- worth €2,000 and €5,000 respectively.

A fourth-year student specialising in womenswear at NCAD, leather was common to Emmy's two entries.

For the DIT entry Emmy created her 'Metallic Knights' outfit, pictured right on Suzi McAdam by photographer Shane O'Neill.

Second place in the DIT competition went to Fiona Nunan from Greystones, Co Wicklow, a student at the Grafton Academy.

Third place went to NCAD student Averil Blakely from Knocklyon, Dublin 16.

The two joint runners-up in the Nokia competition were Matthew Karp from Limerick Senior College and Niamh Rafferty from Grafton Academy, who each won €1,000.
