Darren Kennedy's Style File: How to wear - Culottes

Culottes have proven to be the trend to try this year, but my advice is to tread carefully. Appearing on many spring/summer 2014 catwalks, including Mulberry, Emporio Armani, Victoria Beckham, Céline and Alexander Wang, it's the trouser shape of the season.
Banish thoughts of sloppy silhouettes,– 2014 is the year of cool culottes as the wide-leg, cropped style, calf-skimming pants have undergone a chic makeover. For a sleek, modern aesthetic, keep the look pared back and style a structured black pair with high heels and a crisp white shirt, à la Victoria Beckham. If you want to ramp it up a notch, go for a pair in a bold primary colour or striking geometric print.
The most universally flattering style will be in a neutral colour palette that falls just below knee-length. White or black culottes provide a polished and modern style without looking like you're trying too hard. A tailored pair will easily transition from day to night, while less structured culottes are best suited to a laid-back look. Wear with an ankle strap sandal or wedge to elongate the silhouette. If you're leg conscious, in particular your calf/ankle area, best to avoid this trend.
