Darren Kennedy: Mastering the midi
Short or tall, anyone can wear a lengthy skirt this season.
Midi hems naturally lend themselves to a ladylike style but take your queues from Alexa Chung by juxtaposing the sophistication of the hem length with an oversized jumper or Breton stripe sweater for a completely modern vibe.
Midi hems are enjoying a revival much in thanks to Gucci and its ubiquitous geek chic style, and Alexa Chung who’s been championing the longer length hem for a couple of seasons now. The great thing about the midi hem is not only is it feminine and chic, but it also covers a multitude of sins from knobbly knees to partially unshaven legs (shock horror!). It’s the perfect transitional wardrobe piece which means it’s ideal for the Irish summer which tends to hover somewhere between spring and winter. Try a soft pleated skirt that grazes the calf and pair with anything from tucked-in shirts and heels to a leather jacket and your favourite trainers.

The ideal length for a midi is just above the knee or just below — make sure the hem falls on the slimmest part of your leg as this creates a more slender silhouette. If you’re on the shorter side then be sure to pick a hem that is slightly above the mid calf.
