Polka dots are back - and bigger and bolder than ever

Cate Blanchett rarely puts a foot wrong on the red carpet and stepping out at the Women In Film 2016 Crystal + Lucy Awards in California recently, she kept things chic with a black skirt, shirt and a polka-dot blazer draped over her shoulders adding some interest to an otherwise demure outfit

Polished in polkas

Could polka dots be the new stripes? Taking a glance at the catwalks, it would certainly seem to be the case. Dots were big and bold, appearing printed on dresses, oversized blazers, cropped trousers and kimono-style gowns as designers pushed the pattern into the spotlight this season. They are much more polished than in years past — slightly larger in scale too. Featuring high-concept details, like contrasting hues and perforated accents on sheer fabrics, runway heavy-hitters including Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana and Marc Jacobs, have emblazoned silhouettes with the playful spots for a more mature look.

Fashionable travel

Fashionistas flocking to the capital this summer will be interested in the Fitzwilliam Hotel’s new ‘Trending Summer’ experience package. Taking advantage of its location at the top of Grafton Street and around the corner from the city’s ‘fashion quarter’, the hotel has launched a new ‘Fashion Tour’ walking podcast. The tour takes visitors on a sartorial adventure from South William Street, to George’s Arcade, Dame Street, and back along through the main shopping artery of Grafton Street, stopping at select boutiques and fashionable treasure troves including some of Dublin’s style stalwarts and emerging designers. Following a morning exploring, a healthy appetite will be rewarded by the hotel’s Inn on the Green team, who will serve up their signature Late Afternoon Tea. Hotel guests will also receive a 10pc discount at Kilkenny Stores on Nassau Street. The package includes a one-night stay for two with breakfast, headphones for the Fashion Walking Tour podcast, and afternoon tea from €299 per night.
