Colette Fitzpatrick: “I couldn’t have given a monkeys”
Fashion faux pas as 'The Supremes' arrive at fashion awards in same dress
Journalist Colette Fitzpatrick laughed off reports that she was concerned about arriving to the VIP style awards in the same dress as two other guests.
“I went straight up to Caitlin (McBride) and we had a good laugh about it and then Melanie (Finn) rocked in as well,” The Herald columnist told Ryan Tubridy on 2fm this morning.
As Colette writes: "Then there were three, in a supernova of glitter...aka The Supremes."
When other attendees at Friday’s bash realised the gaffe, Fitzpatrick said she “had a stream of people commiserating with me throughout the night”.
However, she joked that people might have secretly been delighted about the three similar dresses that were hard not to notice – floor length gold gowns with sequins.
"Oh they were absolutely delighted. People do care about these things but I couldn't have given a monkeys. As long as I was comfortable in the dress – and I returned it with most of the sequins on it!,” she laughed.
Colette dismissed the fact that she’s considered a celebrity in Ireland, with the quip, “Celebrities in Ireland are thrown around like snuff at a wake”
“I know Caitlin, Melanie or myself wouldn’t think of ourselves like that. It might be a big deal for Rihanna or Beyonce but not for the Irish VIP awards.”
Even when her dress was given a mention in Michael O’Doherty’s speech at the event, Fitzpatrick took it on the chin: “I just stood up and took a bow”.
Colette also recalled that at her low-key wedding party, one of her guests turned up in a cream dress and this didn’t even bother her. “People kept coming up to me, are you OK?”
“But to be honest, in the grand scheme of things, what does that matter?”
“I just hope I don’t put anyone else off hiring out the same dress!”
