Clever Couture: Stella McCartney from catwalk to high street

Stella's voice has matured as a designer since her early days at Chloe. Her winter collection was a serious affair full of sombre, masculine separates with a minimalist aesthetic. Fastenings were concealed, further enhancing the austerity of the clothing's silhouettes.
The palette was mainly cool and neutral in grey, cream, black and beige. Pants were cut with a mannish sensibility and paired with no-frills grey or black crew-neck sweaters.
Although barren of embellishment the luxury of the fabric saved this collection from looking bleak.
Leather, wool and silk made these clothes a uniform of everyday basics with beautiful cuts.
Flashes of orange, fuchsia and red were Stella's only concession to colour, while a biscuit and black striped dress were her one foray into pattern this season.
However, her eveningwear range hinted at her love of vintage-inspired lingerie as she showed cocktail tops and dresses with a lace embroidered base muted by a gauzy layer of sheer nude or black silk to dull the prettiness.
These pieces showed that although Stella may have moved on from the uber femininity of her past collections, as a designer she is still a romantic at heart.
