Ah yes, swimwear season is in full flight. That time of year that can strike fear into even the most confident of fashionistas. Crash diets, Pilates in place of lunch, exfoliating, depilating; the stress alone will have you fading down to a size minus-zero.

The misconception is that this is all about your body. Has all your fashion niftyness been left in hibernation? Style rules still apply, so if you consider what suits your shape, size and colouring, (just like you do the rest of the year) you'd be amazed how flattering a piece of swimwear can be.

Rule Number One: String bikinis suit less than 1pc of the population, so don't put yourself through it. Two: get out of your comfort zone and try on a selection of styles. Three: If you're curvy, never underestimate the flattering nature of a vintage style. See Norma Kamali in '5 of the best'; she designs with you in mind.
