A NIGHT away from the schoolbooks paid off handsomely for one Leaving Cert student, after she won one of the most lucrative model competitions in the country.

A 17-year-old student at Skerries Community College in north Dublin, Carla Jackson swapped exam revision for the catwalk on Friday night and travelled to Sligo, where she won the Independent Newspapers Regional Titles' 'Search for a Model' competition.

Carla picked up a €1,000 shopping voucher when she won a regional final in Drogheda, Co Louth, two weeks ago.

A busy, glamorous summer now stretches ahead of her after she secured a lucrative contract with the Catwalk Modelling Agency, €5,000 in cash from Gosh cosmetics and a hamper of make-up worth €500.

"I can't believe it. This is all down to my mum, Susan, who really believed in me and encouraged me to enter," said Carla.

The judges included model Rozanna Purcell and Gillian Filan, wife of Westlife's Shane Filan, who was one of the VIP guests at the event held at Sligo's Clarion Hotel.
