Botanical beauties: chic summer bargains
Bairbre Power starts the hunt for chic summer bargains in Kildare
This week, 'Weekend' headed off on the first of our summer fashion forays. Our mission was to find great, wallet-pleasing buys -- pretty, colourful wardrobe additions to suit everyone's budget.
And didn't we do well on our maiden voyage into Kildare? We discovered the supremely chic, black-and-cream outfit at the new Carraig Donn store in Newbridge, and photographed it down the road at the Japanese Gardens in Kildare.
The elegant tea house with pagoda roof was the perfect backdrop to this ever-so-versatile ensemble -- a favourite colour combination of Coco Chanel. Layered up with a pearl pendant necklace, it has a very Gallic-chic feel.
The dress's cream chiffon skirt is trimmed with raw-edged lace, which gives it a very expensive look but the price is €109. The matching edge-to-edge cardi jacket is equally brilliantly priced at €69 and is trimmed with cream lace.
Together, the pieces come in under €180 but the jacket would pay its way, lifting black work trousers on a dull Monday morning. It is this kind of wardrobe worker that I love, and discovering the Soma label was one of the highlights of the day. It is one of the key players stocked at Carraig Donn's 23 stores along with J'aime La Vie, Vila, Peruzza, Rise and Cutie. It opened new stores in Newbridge and Dun Laoghaire this month. If you are too busy to go shopping, you'll find an online store at www.carraigdonn.ie.
Liz Hurley's iconic look of white skinny jeans is a favourite summer look, but we gave it a very pretty twist with a gypsy-style, off-the-shoulder top with a floral print from J'aime La Vie.
Florals are back again in the autumn, so it makes sense to buy botanicals. The 'Rebecca' dress shot on the Giverny-style red bridge costs €59, the same price as the Rise 'Etta' print dress with cape-effect top.
