HENRY VIII and Anne Boleyn, Sid and Nancy -- they might all have been disastrous at romance but, boy, did they inspire good fashion.

Sumptuous embroidery and lavish fabrics dazzled dog-walkers on Sandymount Strand in Dublin yesterday as the eight shortlisted student designs in the DIT Alfa Romeo Fashion Show were unveiled.

There was little room for stark minimalism, given the theme of "Romeo & Giulietta -- A Bad Romance" but there was bags of drama and classical appeal.

The shortlist is: Mona Atkinson from Castlebar, Co Mayo; Yvette Byrne from Ardattin, Co Carlow; Anne Carey from Salthill, Co Galway; Aoife Conroy from Breaffy, Co Mayo; Stephanie Kenny from Athlone, Co Westmeath; Umit Kutluk from Glenealy, Co Wicklow; Jenny Massey from Greystones, Co Wicklow; and Amy McAlinder from Blackrock, Co Dublin.
