Anna Wintour allegedly didn't want any of her Vogue staff to "stand out in an appropriate way" at last nights' Met Gala.

The revered fashion editor organises and hosts the annual ball at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, which draws in a crowd of some of the world's biggest stars.

To make sure her staff looked well turned out Anna reportedly set strict dress code rules that had to be abided by.

"Anna doesn’t want anyone to stand out in an inappropriate way. The night is for the invitees, not the Vogue staff.

"Vogue staffers were only allowed to choose dresses in seven distinct colour palettes, including a gray-lavender and sea foam,” a Met Ball insider told New York Daily News' Confidenti@l column.

The source also added that Anna tasked design house Reem Acra with creating the staff looks, confiding to her inner circle that the fashion brand "[are] the only ones who really know how to do a ball gown.”

Anna herself stunned guests in a flower covered Chanel dress, accessorised with a jewelled necklace.

Despite the strict style rules imposed upon Vogue workers, they still managed to look chic in designer heels.

“The staff will be dressed uniformly,” a second insider confirmed before the gala kicked off, adding that most of them wear Manolo Blahnik shoes meant to match the dress, rather than amaze and impress.

Earlier in the day America's First Lady Michelle Obama was the guest of honour at the official opening of the museum's costume centre, which has been renamed after Anna.

Wearing a calf-length green floral Naeem Khan dress, Michelle cut the ribbon on the renovated Anna Wintour Costume Center. She also announced that she'll be working alongside Anna to organise a fashion workshop at the White House for students.
