Jazz girls are all the rage thanks to Baz Luhrmann's reimagining of 'The Great Gatsby', but remember, it is a shape that suits skinny minnies best.

If you're fascinated by the hourglass silhouette, then look to the 1950s for inspiration.

Charlotte Cargin and Jane Skovgaard, the duo behind the Kinsale-based fashion label Charlotte & Jane, have a talent for giving retro shapes a new relevance.

The nipped-in waist and the show-off collar are executed in handsome silks and stand-out colours.

And, this season, the girls had fun playing up the flirty qualities of the full-skirted dress, brilliantly illustrated by the Angelica dresses (far right).

Their spring/summer 2013 range – with its high-ish necklines and low-ish hems – is a tantilising mix of nostalgia and elegant tailoring.

If this Cork pair have discovered anything, it's that Irish woman love to be their own woman and to stand out in the crowd.

You can create an utterly unique piece by dipping into a portfolio of different pattern shapes and matching them with a range of fabric swatches.

The fabric selection is fascinating – and homegrown. There's a subtle silk/wool herringbone fabric from Magee of Donegal; wool/cotton-mix tweeds from Kerry Woollen Mills and a wide range of wool/silk-mix fabrics from Wexford Woollen Mills.

While the dresses are made by seamstresses in Cork and Kerry and delivered within four weeks, you can also add a bespoke touch with custom embroidery that is stitched by hand in a Fair Trade factory in India.
