The star of The Great British Bake Off wept as she recalled the accident in 1989 when William had come home from university during a BBC documentary about her life.

Her raw emotions as she was filmed visiting William’s grave led to a wave of sympathy on social media from viewers who called for her to be made a dame.

William had come home from university on a Friday night and enjoyed a family roast dinner.

"I remember him walking through the door and asking 'Who is coming?' And I said, 'It's for you, it's so lovely to see you and have you here'," Berry said.

He borrowed the family car the following day for a trip into town and never returned.

"It was about 1pm. The doorbell rang and a policeman was there. Immediately, I knew why. He said, 'There's been an accident and I'm sorry to say your son is dead'."

She and her husband rushed to hospital where they saw William for the last time.

"He just looked so beautiful and so lovely, his little cold face and it was nice to say farewell."
