The former model spoke to Colette Fitzpatrick on Newstalk about her decision to revert from her married name back to her maiden name, and how she feels people shouldn't be quick to put a label on her family situation.

The 40-year-old blonde was married to former Boyzone singer Ronan Keating from 1998 to 2011, but they parted ways when it was revealed he had been unfaithful with a backing dancer.

Yvonne now lives in Malahide with her three children Jack, Missy and Ali.

"The word broken marriages and broken families is thrown around. When I found myself in that situation first, we were all on great terms but it was difficult," she said.

"But the kids had grown up with a father who wasn't always there anyway. They were used to periods of time where they wouldn't see their dad all the time so they adjusted quite well."

She concluded that she is proud of her "modern family".

On the subject of her decision to change her name, Yvonne said it was an important move to cement her status as an independent woman.

"I could have changed it sooner. But I was determined that I'd change it when I felt ready and the kids felt ready. I mentioned it to my kids one day and they didn't see it coming. They didn't get it. They said, 'You're not going to be the same name as us?' From a kid's point of view, it's strange that your mum isn't going to have the same name as you when that's how you grew up."

"Identity-wise it was nice. I embraced my independence a few years ago after my separation. It was really important for me. Going back to Connolly was the final step."
