'We weren't allowed to adopt...now I'm glad we didn't,' reveals Alan Hughes' partner Karl
Karl Broderick has revealed he and husband Alan Hughes are glad they have not adopted children.
Same-sex couples can now adopt under recent changes to the laws, but the singer-songwriter said he and Alan feel they have made the right decision in not becoming parents.
"I'm kind of glad that I didn't. We weren't really allowed," he told the Diary.
The TV star reckons the couple are too old to start a family now.
"We weren't afforded a chance to do it whether we liked it or not, and now I think people would say we're too old," he said.
"I don't think I'm too old. I'm 19 at heart. It's not something I've felt I've ever really wanted. I think Alan might have at one stage, but he's over it."
However, Karl revealed he did want children when he was younger.
"For years I've gone through wanting kids and then not wanting them," he said.
"Then when I've not wanted them I've gone 'thank God I didn't have them' and then I think, 'what if I had had them in a period when I wanted them?'"
Ultimately, Karl said the couple are happy with the decision they've made and have several nieces and nephews in their lives to spend time with.
"We have great nieces and nephews and we're godparents for loads of kids," he said.
The pair have been together for more than two decades and are due to renew their vows soon.
Karl said that Alan still makes him laugh after all that time.
"I think he's phenomenal," he said.
"He keeps saying to me he's really proud of me and that's really lovely to have him say that to me.
"He makes me laugh every single day. He's very funny."
