Vanessa Hudgens accused of cultural appropriation for wearing box braids
Vanessa Hudgens has been accused of cultural appropriation for wearing her hair in box braids.
The High School Musical star posted pictures to Snapchat on Sunday wearing what appears to be a wig styled into box braids, which are traditionally worn by African women as a protective style for their hair.
Fans took to Twitter to respond to Hudgens' photos, with one user saying: "Vanessa Hudgens, the queen of cultural appropriation."
It isn't the first time the former Disney star has landed herself in hot water for using cultural and religious symbols as accessories.
The singer posed for photos on Instagram in a full traditional Indian sari in 2012, and wore a bindi and Native American headdress at Coachella in 2014.
Earlier this year the actress was fined $1,000 for carving a heart into a red rock wall during a trip to Sedona, Arizona after posting a picture of the carving to Instagram.
Hudgens is yet to comment on her choice of accessories, while multiple celebrities have also been accused of cultural appropriation over the last 24 months, with Justin Bieber stepping out with dreadlocks in April and Kylie Jenner wearing cornrows in July 2015.
