TV3 star Elaine Crowley has opened up about her desire to have children, saying she would "love to have kids, but it just didn't happen".

The Midday host (39), who is currently starring on Celebrity Operation Transformation, said a multitude of factors are behind the reasons why she never had children, but says her nieces and nephews "keep her going".

"Of course I have regrets in hindsight," she told the October issue of VIP Magazine.

"If I had been in a relationship and kids had been an option, I would have had them, but I haven't ever been in a long-term relationship and I wouldn't do it by myself.

"I'd love to have had kids, but it just didn't happen. I probably beat myself up over it and there's enough regrets in life to be regretting that. Anyway, I have my 100-odd nieces and nephews so they can keep me going."

The Cork native said that Irish women still "have a long way to come" in terms of equality when it comes to having both a family and a career.

"I'm not a believer that you can have everything," she added. "I don't care what anyone says. Women have a long way to come with equality in this country and like it or not, if you bear a child, you're out of action for maternity leave.

"And, you know, I've interviewed CEOs and women in high-up jobs over the years and the one thing they had in common was a stay-at-home husband.

"That's how they reached the pinnacle of success. So something's got to give, if you want everything. Unless you are rich enough to have a nanny or your partner will stay at home, how else do you do it?"

The famously frank presenter has become an overnight inspiration after losing a whopping 1stone 2lbs on the RTE reality show on Wednesday night.
