They were one of the biggest power couples on the world stage of sports - but now Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn have ended their three-year relationship in a thoroughly modern fashion - with synchronised Facebook posts.

The golfer and Olympic gold-medallist skier revealed that they have "mutually decided" to stop dating and to end their relationship.

The break-up is just the latest in Tiger Woods's losing streak when it comes to romance - as well as golf.

Woods has not won on the course since August 2013 and will fall out of the top 120 in the next world ranking.

As recently as a month ago at the US Masters, Vonn was photographed on the Augusta National course with Woods and his children, saying she felt lucky to be part of the lives of Woods's two children, and called the golfer and his kids "amazing".

However, yesterday, in an announcement on her Facebook page, she wrote: "After nearly three years together, Tiger and I have mutually decided to end our relationship. I will always cherish the memories that we've created together. Unfortunately, we both lead incredibly hectic lives that force us to spend a majority of our time apart.

"I will always admire and respect Tiger. He and his beautiful family will always hold a special place in my heart."

While according to a post on Woods's website, entitled "A Personal Message From Tiger", he and Vonn have called it quits, saying: "He and Lindsey Vonn have mutually decided to stop dating."

Three years ago, Woods and Vonn announced their megawatt celebrity relationship, also in synchronized Facebook posts.

Vonn, one of the top women skiers in the world, had praised the parenting skills of Woods during the Masters and said she was impressed with Woods's daughter Sam (7) and son Charlie (6).

"They're great. They're amazing kids, and he's an amazing father," Vonn told 'People Magazine'.

On April 21, Vonn gave no hint of a looming break-up during an interview on US breakfast TV, when she said: "Everyone in my family loves him. He talks to my mom all the time. He's texting my dad when I'm racing.

"He's just a really sweet guy, everyone fell in love with him."

The two came together not long after their respective marriages ended.

Vonn was newly divorced while Woods's marriage to Elin Nordegren ended in 2009 in a spectacular sex scandal which saw his career and personal life implode when a series of women alleged he had affairs with them.

After discovering his infidelity, Nordegren chased him out of the house with a golf club.

He then smashed his SUV into a tree and was knocked unconscious.

Police refused to allow Nordegren to travel with Woods to the hospital, suspecting a domestic violence dispute.

Over a dozen women came forward to claim affairs with Woods and he checked into a clinic for sex addiction, while Nordegren received a divorce settlement close to €100m.
