Teenage Judy Garland was 'sexually assaulted' by Wizard of Oz munchkins, reports her ex-husband
Judy Garland was 'sexually assaulted' by munchkins on the set of The Wizard of Oz when she was a teenager, according to her ex-husband.
Sid Luft, who was married to Garland from 1952 to 1965, wrote about the alleged abuse in his memoir, Judy and I: My Life with Judy Garland.
"They would make Judy’s life miserable on set by putting their hands under her dress," reads an exceprt.
"The men were 40 or more years old."
"They thought they could get away with anything because they were so small,” he added.
Judy and I: My Life with Judy Garland is based on notes from Luft's autobiography, which remained unpublished before his death in 2005.
Garland spoke about the actors' behaviour before her death in 1969.
“They were little drunks … They got smashed every night, and they picked them up in butterfly nets," she said.
Speaking in 2009, Munchkin actress Margaret Pellegrini said: “There were a lot of them who liked to go out and have a few drinks, but nothing got out of hand. Everyone was having a good time and enjoying themselves. There was no rowdiness or anything like that, and those stories are very upsetting.”
