Joseph, 70, who is best known for playing Dorien Green in the popular sitcom, is the oldest contestant to take to the dance floor this year.

She said: "I've been trying to do lots of cardio stuff so I am walking everywhere plus doing exercise classes and yoga classes as much as I can and trying to lose weight but I am failing in that so far!

"I think another challenge will be trying to keep going with the training. I'm not 21, I'm not 31 or 41 so I think as far as that's concerned that will probably be the biggest challenge."

The actress said she wanted to be able to pace herself so she wasn't exhausted by the time she reached the Saturday night shows.

The critic she would most like to impress is none other than judge Craig Revel Horwood. The pair are no strangers and "job shared" last year in the theatre production Annie.

She explained: "Craig, because we job shared when we both played Miss Hannigan last year. He opened in Annie and then I took over so I really want to impress him."

:: Strictly Come Dancing - The Launch Show will be broadcast on BBC One on Saturday, during which the 15 celebrity contestants will discover which professional dancer they will be paired with.
