Tennis star Serena Williams has removed a photo from her Instagram page after more than 600 fans complained about it in less than two hours.

The picture, from a photoshoot with People Magazine, was criticised due to the apparent photoshopping of Williams' waistline to make her appear slimmer.

The black and white picture, showing Williams wearing a black swimsuit, was swiftly condemned by followers.

"The one natural beauty who doesn’t need photoshop is the one they give it too smh," said one fan. Another wrote: "I love her but the bar behind her waist is so warped. Disappointing."

"You could see the pole behind her is distorted." said another. "I have seen her in person MANY times! She's too gorgeous for them to be distorting her like this."

Apparently noticing the furore the picture was causing, Williams took it down from her account, and quickly replaced it with another picture that was nearly identical - but without the controversial photoshopping.

The replacement photo, captioned "@people mag most beautiful 2016 ✊  ", has garnered far more favourable responses, and close to 44,000 likes since it was posted to Instagram on Friday.

"So much better and stronger without the retouching," said one fan, summing up the tenor of many of the comments.
