Ruth Negga dazzles in Chanel couture alongside boyfriend Dominic Cooper at Preacher premiere
It's back to the day job for Irish actress Ruth Negga.
The 34-year-old star, who became the toast of Hollywood earlier this year for her portrayal in Loving and subsequent Best Actress nomination, celebrated the arrival of the second series of smash xxxx hit Preacher on Tuesday night.
Negga opted for a Chanel black sequin and feather combination as she walked the red carpet alongside boyfriend of seven years Dominic Cooper, the eponymous preacher, whom she often along acts with in projects - in fact, they reportedly first met while rehearsing for a production of Phèdre for the National Theatre in London in 2009.
Despite their public roles, this long-term couple go to painstaking lengths to preserve their privacy: Ruth, who was born in Ethiopia and moved to Ireland when she was four, walked the Oscars red carpet alone and avoided stepping in the same shot as her other half as they partied at the Vanity Fair after-party.
In interviews, she skillfully dodges questions about him, only dishing to Vogue about how the opportunity for them to appear together onscreen came about.
"I had the script first. And he put me on tape for it, reading, and then he was like: ‘Hold on a minute; this is really good.’ I showed him the comic-book cover, and it’s basically his face," she explained.
It marks her first major project since awards season ended - of which she was the darling - landing a Vogue, Vanity Fair and W cover in the last six months alone. And Negga said she was happy to return to a set that excited her after the hullabaloo of the Academy Awards.
"To close the door on all that heightened emotion and excitement, to hear Meryl Streep call your name, or walk on the iconic red carpet at Cannes, and then find yourself staring into the abyss would have been quite a shock," she told the Telegraph.
"Thankfully, I got to come back to a job with people I love and admire."
As for that's next, she explained: "I'm not in a rush. I'm not that kind of person. I move quite slowly in my work. It's important for me to figure out what I would like to do and what's possible before I get sucked up into any whirlwind."
