Rory McIlroy brings pal Niall Horan for boys night at BBC Sports Awards
Niall Horan and Rory McIlroy continued their bromance at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.
As the One Direction singer (22) is officially on hiatus from the world's biggest boyband, his first official action as a man of leisure was to join his good friend, the former world number one golfer at the prestigious awards in Belfast.
The star-studded awards ceremony at the Odyssey Arena also saw All Black Dan Carter and wife Honor take to the red carpet, as well as AP and Channelle McCoy, Graeme McDowell and wife Kristin Stape, Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington and Andy Murray.
Both Niall and Rory are both home on Irish soil for the festive season, with Horan set to celebrate Christmas in his native Mullingar and McIlroy (26) will be marking the festive season in Holywood, Co Down.
The unlikely pair have been firm friends in recent years, with Niall even caddying for him twice at the US Masters in Augusta and the Celebrity Pro-Am tournament. The Nike spokesman was pictured in Dublin over the weekend outside the five star Westbury Hotel, laden down with shopping bags.
Rory recently announced his engagement to American PGA employee and girlfriend of one year Erica Stoll. He popped the question in Paris and praised his other half for her "calming influence."
"Erica has been around me quite a lot at tournaments but we have really just tried to keep it low key,” he said during an appearance Facebook's Dublin headquarters.
"She is a very low key person, not the kind to broadcast stuff, but that side of my life is really good just now. We are excited, our parents are excited so it is a really happy time.
"For me, Erica brings such a level of normality to everything. She has a calming presence, a sereneness and that’s not just on me; it is noticeable in any company. She never wants to be the centre of attention and is always very comfortable in the background."
